Esztergom is a charming little baroque town in northern Hungary,
about 50 km north-west of the capital Budapest. It lies in Komarom-Esztergom
county, on the right bank of the river Danube, which forms the border with
Slovakia there. And Esztergom used to be the first capital of Hungary (the
10th till the mid-13th century) and still today the center of the Roman
Catholic Church. We will visit the grand Cathedral on the Castle hill, its famous Treasury and Cardinal Mindszenty Memorial.

It’s the main church of the Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest, and the seat of the Catholic Church in Hungary. Basilica built between 1820 and 1870 as the largest church in the country and one of the largest in the world. It is dedicated to Saint Adalbert and the Blessed Virgin Mary Taken into Heaven.
